Our Model Neighborhood
The Cleveland Flats
BCbD has identified the Flats as a model neighborhood where best practices in design and sustainability will be encouraged. As a result of BCbD’s Flats design work, the signature space -- once so polluted the Cuyahoga River caught fire -- will become a national model of sustainable urbanism. We plan to achieve this goal by 2019, the 50th anniversary of the last river fire in 1969.
The Urban Design Center of Cleveland, one of BCbD's partners, created the maps below to help catalog proposed development projects and public space plans.

BCbD will oversee a comprehensive public realm design process for the Flats beginning in early 2008. Fundraising for this design work has already begun. The products of this design process will include:
- A pedestrian and transit connections plan. The plan will include new streetscape and infrastructure designs to link residential developments with adjacent neighborhoods and key public spaces, encouraging people to explore the Flats
- A design for Canal Basin Park and related connections
- A design for Wendy Park and related connections
- Updated design guidelines for the Flats
